We are seeking an Associate Director of Biology to report to the Head of Cardurion K.K. Key areas of responsibility will include leading preclinical pharmacology/biology studies on-site, characterizing promising candidate compounds, establishing datasets for regulatory submissions, and contributing to external collaborations, clinical asset value, and translational/biomarker research by managing our Shonan biology research group. Success will require close collaboration with the management team (Head and Deputy Head), external partners, and Cardurion Pharmaceuticals Inc. The ideal candidate will have significant expertise in cardiovascular research, effective communication skills in Japanese and English, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive flexible solutions.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Management of Shonan Biology Research Group: Manage the Shonan Biology Research Group (currently 4 members). Guide, motivate, and help them all the time. Evaluate their contributions sincerely and fairly. Take responsibility for workplace safety.
  • Leading of Preclinical pharmacology/Biology Studies On-Site: Leverage your excellent cardiovascular research skills and expertise to lead pharmacology/ biology preclinical studies performed at our Shonan biology laboratories and animal facilities.
  • Characterization of Promising Candidate Compounds for Cardiovascular Diseases: Characterize candidate compounds and deliver promising candidates to our
  • development team. This work includes establishing assay systems, understanding in vivo PK/PD relationships, and elucidating mechanisms of action.
  • Establishment of Datasets for Regulatory Submissions: Utilize internal and external resources to build and report the pharmacology data required for IND submission.
  • Contributions to External collaborations, Clinical asset value, and Translational/ Biomarker Research: As an expert in basic cardiovascular research, proactively contribute to external collaborations, enhancing clinical asset value, and translational/biomarker research.
  • Creation and Promotion of Great Culture: As a member of the leadership team, take responsibility for creating and promoting the great company culture.

Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Ph.D., D.V.M., M.D., or master's degree in pharmacology/biology or equivalent certification.
  • Ten or more years of experience working as a basic cardiovascular research scientist in academia and/or companies.
  • Original research papers and/or official reports written in English.
  • Understanding of the drug discovery process in the cardiovascular field, including target identification, lead generation, lead optimization, efficacy and safety evaluation, and IND submission.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology/biology studies (in vitro and in vivo) for drug discovery, as well as pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and toxicology.
  • Understanding of lab safety and regulations in Japan.
  • Communication skills in Japanese and English.
  • No difficulties with reading and writing in Japanese.
  • Excellent organizational management skills and leadership skills.
  • Mentorship of team members.
  • On-site work at Shonan iPark.

  • Experience collaborating with international teams.
  • Experience participating in collaborative research projects with external teams.
